Does anyone know why Apple removed the power button from the keyboards of newer Macs? I had assumed that it was something that could be done over ADB but not over USB and that that was the reasoning ...

You can pull off the key and/or put something under it, or tape over the contact (if it's a membrane keyboard and you don't mind opening it up).
