I have the standard Mandrake 8.0 install. My PC boots into Gnome. How do I change the settings to boot into the command line?

Is there an option for the "ps" command in 10.6 to only show GUI apps (perhaps those appearing in the dock, or either the dock or the menu bar)? I couldn't find anything obvious.
