Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy explained Wednesday that he recently changed his wife’s flight to avoid the embattled Newark Liberty International Airport — but not because of safety issues.

Newark Liberty International Airport is facing another FAA-imposed ground delay due to staffing shortages, after a telecommunications issue led to delays on Sunday.

The FAA was set to have a “delay reduction” meeting Wednesday, seeking to cap the total number of flights at the airport.

The recent chronic delays and cancellations at New Jersey’s largest airport have highlighted the shortage of air traffic controllers and the aging equipment they use, which President Donald Trump's administration wants to replace.

Similar to last summer, there is currently a nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers, which will “take time” to replenish, according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
