    • Organogenesis in plants is controlled by meristems (Steeves and Sussex, 1989). Organs are produced in the peripheral zone of the meristem, while the central zone retains a pool of cells that do not differentiat… See more

    Results

The Sos1-Reference allele arose spontaneously (Doebley et al., 1995). Seeds were obtained from the Maize Genetics Coop and backcrossed six times to B73. The mutant had previously been reported to map to the short arm of chromosome 4 (Doebley et al., 1995). To generate a mapping population, Sos1 (in the B73 background) was crossed to the Mo17 geneti...

    Discussion

The most striking defect in Sos1 mutants is that the SPM initiates one instead of two SMs. In addition, Sos1 mutants have defects in SPM initiation, which we propose is due to the overall reduction in apical IM size. Sos1 mutants also produce fewer branches. However, the branches that are produced are not normal branches but are mixed branches, whi...

Plant Growth and Mature Phenotype Characterization
The Sos1-Reference allele was obtained from the Maize Genetics Cooperation Stock Center (stock 427I) and backcrossed six times into the B73 genetic background of maize (Zea mays). Analysis of mature phenotype was carried out on plants grown at Rock Springs, PA, during the summer. The plants were genotyped as Sos1 heterozygotes or homozygotes using SSR marker umc1294, which is the closest genetic marker identified so far (umc1294F, 5′-GCC GTC AAC GGG CTT AAA CT-3′ and umc1294R, 5′-GCC TCC ACG...

  1. A natural variant of COOL1 gene enhances cold tolerance for high ...

Mar 6, 2025 · How maize adapts to cold climates remains largely unclear. Here, we identify a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor, COLD-RESPONSIVE OPERATION LOCUS 1 …

  2. Evolutionary, structural and expression analysis of core genes

Aug 24, 2018 · All amino acid sequences of maize AGPase, SS, SBE and DBE genes were analysed with MEME (v4.11.4) to discover novel conserved patterns (http://meme-suite.org/tools/meme).

  3. Structural features and active site analysis of SS …

Download scientific diagram | Structural features and active site analysis of SS isoforms. Maize is shown as an example.

  4. The control of maize spikelet meristem fate by theAPETALA2-like …

We have identified a gene called indeterminate spikelet1 (ids1) that specifies a determinate spikelet meristem fate and thereby limits the number of floral meristems produced. In the …

  5. Genotype-environment interaction for grain yield in maize

The objective of this study was to evaluate genotype by environment interaction for grain yield in maize (Zea mays L.) grown in South Poland using the AMMI model.

  6. Genetic control of cereal kernel texture: Towards a maize model

Sep 12, 2025 · Because cereal kernel texture is a determinant of maize end-use properties, it is desirable to elucidate the genetic control of kernel formation and thereby to optimize maize …

  7. The maize-NAM design served as a model for other crops such as sorghum [1, 49–51], peanut [52, 53], barley [11, 54–57], oilseed rape [22, 58], wheat [59–63], rice [64, 65], soybean [66, 67] …

  8. In maize, this procedure is well-established for a limited number of public lines that are amenable for genetic transformation. Fast-Flowering Mini-Maize (FFMM) lines A and B were recently …

  9. De novo genome assembly and analyses of 12 founder inbred

Jan 16, 2023 · De novo genome assembly and analyses of 12 maize FILs provide insights into genomic and phenotypic differentiation of various heterotic groups and the molecular basis of …
