When our invertebrate palaeontology team go fossil-hunting, not every fossil from the field comes out fully exposed. In those instances, Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron (Richard M. Ivey Curator of Invertebrate Palaeontology) will remove the part of the rock that covers the fossil using an instrument looking like a micro jackhammer.
